Facebook revealing the personal data it collects, won't spare your drunk-poking blushes

Facebook’s massively expanding its Download Your Information service into an all-encompassing archive of the data Mr. Zuckerberg collects about your daily dose of people-stalking. DYL was introduced in 2010 and allowed you to pull down all the photos, posts, messages, friend lists and chat conversations in the archives — but now will also offer stored IP Addresses, previous names you’ve used, friend requests you’ve made, with further categories due in the future. It’ll have to to sate the concerns of privacy organizations worldwide , since it’s rumored to collect 84 different categories of information about you (85 if you count all those Instagram photos it just bought). It’ll be gradually rolled out to all 845 million users in the coming weeks and is available from your general account settings. Facebook launches 'groups for schools,' keeps enrollment tight

It’s no secret that Facebook encourages users to spend as much time as possible on the site, doing things like sharing photos , playing games , chatting , and of course, sharing status updates . Now, the company is giving students a reason to visit that’s actually related to academics. ‘Groups for schools’ creates a virtual venue for collegiate collaboration, letting students and faculty members share un-copyrighted files within the groups created for their sports teams, clubs and even individual classes. There is a file limit of 25MB in play, so consider those dreams of sharing videos and zipped up apps crushed — you’ll also need to provide a .edu address that matches the school before Facebook grants you admission. At first, online cliques will be limited to colleges in the US, though global institutions will eventually be permitted to join in on the fun as well. In the meantime, who knows — perhaps Dropbox will also launch some kind of super-secret, exclusive club in the near future. Gaikai brings its cloud gaming to Facebook, launches beta application

Gaikai’s certainly grown leaps and bounds since its early days , and today the cloud gaming firm takes another step by joining the largest social networking platform on the globe. For starters, this first beta of Gaikai’s Facebook application is available to North American / European gamers, offering support for browsers such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari and Firefox on Windows, OS X or Linux machines. Gamers who’ve fiddled around with the outfit’s previous betas or Walmart’s Gaikai powered Gamecenter will know the drill: streaming game demos in the frame of your web browser. Ready to try before you buy? The setup is serving up samples of Saints Row: The Third , Dead Rising 2 , Magicka , Sniper: Ghost Warrior , The Witcher 2 , Orcs Must Die! and Farming Simulator 2011 . Gaikai CEO and co-founder David Perry told us that while the outfit’s current Facebook rigging is still centered around demos, it’s primed to push full titles if and when a publisher requests it. “Our goal is to get games as accessible as movies and music,” he told us “so games get the chance to compete.” Gaikai v1.0 is live on Zuck’s site now, so click the source link below, pop in your Facebook credentials and you should be all set. Sean Buckley contributed to this post. Facebook to buy Instagram

How’s this for some big news on an otherwise slow Monday? Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has let slip that his company plans to buy popular photo-sharing app Instagram (pending all of the standard regulatory approvals, naturally). According to a report from All Things D ‘s Kara Swisher, Facebook will pick up the social app, which got its own long-awaited Android version , for a cool $1 billion in cash and shares. Ole Zuck confirmed the news on his personal blog, adding that the deal won’t affect Instagram’s integration with competing social networks: We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed via his site’s blog that the service, “is not going away,” adding, “The Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love.” Check out some PR on the subject after the break. Social media marketing is one of the new up-and-coming departments within online marketing companies. One of the latest social media marketing strategies being used, is when social media experts create a contest on one of the many social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter or Google+. For example, recently I took part in an online contest using Facebook as their social media platform. Many of the contestants were unsure as to what to what to do to be recognized in the contest and what not to do – avoid spamming. Below are four simple tips to help marketers’ avoid the much unwanted situation we found ourselves in. 1.

Congressmen ask devs of 34 iOS apps about user privacy

In the wake of the Path address book fiasco , Congressmen Henry Waxman (D-CA) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) have followed up their initial query to Apple about privacy issues by contacting the people and companies behind 34 iOS apps. The list includes Tim Cook (again), concerning Apple’s own Find My Friends , Mark Zuckerberg and Path’s CEO Dave Morin, among others. The letters themselves are open for viewing on the Committee on Energy and Commerce’s website, and include questions about exactly how many times the apps have been downloaded, what information they transmit back from user’s devices and what happens to that data. The devs have until April 12th to respond, and while we’re not sure what will happen after that, we’re pretty sure this ends with someone’s Hall of Fame consideration in doubt despite seven Cy Youngs and more than 4,000 strikeouts.
